Sacramento — The League of California Cities Women’s Caucus issued the following statement about sexual assault and harassment in the workplace.

Inequality has been a burden on women for centuries. Sexual assault and harassment in the workplace have been and are still far too common. Victims too often fear retaliation from reporting this conduct, which remains under-reported, and that their complaints will not be heard. The League of California Cities Women’s Caucus recognizes the #metoo movement and the urgency it brings to the issue with needed policy changes that protect victims so they can speak out without fear of retaliation and know that their complaints will be addressed.

“The time is now for all those who have been discriminated against to be assured of a safe workplace,” said Caucus President Barb Stanton, council member, Town of Apple Valley. “The Women’s Caucus stands up and proudly denounces any and all sexual harassment or discrimination based on gender. With the strength of our united voices we encourage all California officials to prioritize a safe working environment.”

The Women's Caucus will be hosting a webinar for city officials statewide on the best practices for sexual assault and harassment prevention and reporting. The Caucus will be co-hosting a future workshop with the League’s Los Angeles County Division to continue the discussion to promote good governance in confronting these problems.

The Women’s Caucus is a non-partisan and multicultural organization of local public officials who are dedicated to advancing and empowering women as leaders and advocating for issues that improve the well-being of women and our constituents throughout the state.
